We all do all sorts of things every day of our lives because that's what people do, that's what everybody else does. We get up in the morning, put on clothes, eat cereal, go to work, and so on, just because that's how people live. We don't think about why we're doing these things, they are just universally accepted as being "normal".
I call this society thinking.
Society thinking is the term I use for all the things we think we should just because other people do them. It applies to small things like those I mentioned above, it applies to the way we interact with other people, it applies to the way we make decisions that affect our lives. Society thinking affects everything we think about and everything we do, and that is bad.
Have you ever stopped for a moment and asked yourself why you do the things you do? Why you behave in the way that you behave? Why you make the decisions and choices you make? I bet the answer to a lot of those questions would be "because that's what people do." Is that really a good reason?
Consider for a moment some people who you consider to be outstanding, great, amazing individuals. Do they live their lives like everybody else, doing the same things just because that's what everybody else does? I doubt it. Great people are great because they decided for themselves, they thought about it, and they found a better way.
Great people tend to go against the grain, they do something different, they stand out. They have unique ideas, they do interesting things, they don't get sucked into society thinking. They have the courage to think for themselves and do things differently.
Next time you have a decision to make in your life, stop and think for a minute. Are you making your choices based on what other people do, or based on what you truly feel, want and believe? Are you following your heart or are you stuck in society thinking?
I'm not saying that things other people do should be discounted, it would be ridiculous to stop doing everything that is considered to be normal. I'm suggesting that you question why you are doing things the way you're doing them, exploring alternative ideas and ways of thinking, and choosing what feels right for you personally. If it happens to be that the way everyone else does something feels right for you then great, but if you feel you would be better doing it your own way then go for it.
Stop society thinking, think for yourself, and become great!
